Woburn Abbey

The Racing Room

The 4th Duke redecorated this room as a drawing-room in the eighteenth century. The ceiling was probably designed for Henry Flitcroft by Gianbattista Borra. This room was used by Prince Albert in 1841 as a dressing-room.

After the ceiling had been restored in the 1970s it was refurnished as a Racing Room by Lady Tavistock who also set up the Bloomsbury Stud. The pictures came from various rooms in the house and are now displayed with contemporary paintings and photographs of some of our horses. The Bedford colours - featured in paintings in the room - are still in use today and a copy of the silks can be seen in a display table in the central window embrasure. The pair of Commodes with ormolu mounts either side of the fireplace are attributed to Pierre Langlois.
