Abbotsford House - The Chapel

The Chapel was built in 1855 by Sir Walter Scott's grand-daughter Charlotte, and her husband, James Hope-Scott. Chief objects of interest: Oil painting of Madonna and Child by Ghirlandaio 1483 - 1560 (over the fireplace). The inscription At spes non fracta - But my Hope is not Broken - is the Hope family motto (over the stone mantel).

The carved and painted wood Altar Front is late Gothic c.1480 (Flemish), and depicts The tree of Jesse.The surround is 19th century. In the glass case over doorway: 16th century Spanish

Crucifix.The statues came from Bavaria.

Cardinal Newman was a close friend of the family and celebrated Mass here on several occasions.
