Tatton Park

Location

Knutsford, Cheshire

History

Tatton is one of the most complete historic estates in Britain. Five separate features, special events and private functions attract over 700,000 visitors each year.

Man's occupation of Tatton began 10,000 years ago. The Landscape History Trail guides walkers through time. The Palladian Mansion by Wyatt is the jewel in Tatton's crown. The Egerton family collection of fine paintings, porcelain and furniture is found in the splendid setting of the magnificent staterooms. In stark contrast, the Victorian Kitchens and cellars give a fascinating insight into life 'downstairs'. The Home Farm is still working with traditional breeds of animal and estate workshops.

Extending to 50 acres, the gardens are amongst the most important in England. Attractions include the famous Japanese garden, newly restored orangery, New Zealand tree fernery, Italian terraced garden and maze.

Across the Park at Old Hall, visitors are guided through the smoky shadows of the 15th century great hall, lit by flickering candles and through time to the home of a 1950s estate employee. The Old Hall was leased to his cousin by Thomas Egerton, Lord Chancellor of England during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I and James I.

800 red and fallow deer can be seen when walking or driving in the parkland and around the two meres. Tatton Park is maintained, managed and financed by Cheshire County Council on lease from the National Trust to whom the Mansion and Gardens were bequeathed in 1958 by the late Right Honourable Maurice, Baron Egerton of Tatton, 'for the benefit of the Nation'.
