The North Front Hall

The North Front Hall was the kitchen until the 1760s and the kitchen ranges still exist behind the fireplaces. Bolton Abbey in the Olden Time by Sir Edwin Landseer (1802-73) hangs on the right hand wall as you enter. The 6th Duke's Russian coachman posed for the kneeling beside the stag. The marble mother and child, and the full-length figure of a man are Roman, 1st century A.D. They were found at Apt in provence and bought by the 6th Duke, who was a passionate collector of statuary. The ceiling painting is after the Aurora by Guido Reni.
