The Dome Room

A Picture of the 'Dome Room'

This is where the 1st Dukes house ends and the 6th Dukes wing begins. The two vases are made of a very rare marble, occhio di paone, and are the first of many examples in this part of the house of the 6th Dukes passion for stone.

The open book displayed in the case is a volume from the set of John James Audubon's birds of America (1827-38) which in its day was the largest and grandest book ever printed. The ivory chess set, with chessmen in the shape of elephants, juggernauts and pagodas, is Indian. The incorrect positions of some pieces is determined by pegs which holds them in place.
