The Approach

A Picture of the 'Approach'

The approach to the house is under the arch of the Porter's Lodge between an avenue of tulip trees, with the long wing, added 1820-27, on your left. This massive building including the high tower, or belvedere, above the Theatre at the north end was built for the 6th, 'Bachelor' Duke (1790-1858) by Sir Jeffry Wyatville (1766-1840).

It contains the offices, old kitchens, laundry servants' hall, lamp room, still room, boiler room, carpenter's shop, many bedrooms, the Great Dining Room, Sculpture Gallery, Orangery and Theatre.

The weeping ash by the front door was brought from a Derby garden in 1830 when it was already over 40 years old.
