The Ante-Library

A Picture of the 'Ante-Library

The Ante-Library contains some of the thousands of books to be found throughout the house. The bookcases are made of mahogany and brass like those in the Library. The ceiling painted was the Royal Academy picture of the year in 1823, Iris presenting the wounded Venus to Mars, by Sir George Hayter (1792-1871). The mahogany writing-table was designed by William Kent (1685-1748) for his friend and patron Lord Burlington about 1730.
