History

Built on the site of the Augustinian Priory of Erdbury, Arbury Hall has been the seat of the Newdigate family for over 400 years. This Tudor/Elizabethan house was Œgothicised' by Sir Roger Newdigate, the 5th Baronet, in the 18th century to become ŒThe Gothick Gem of the Midlands'. The Stables portico was designed by Wren.

The saloon and dining room ceilings are especially spectacular, the former modelled on the Henry VII Chapel in Westminster Abbey. Portraits include works by Lely, Romney, Reynolds and Devis, and furniture includes Hepplewhite and Gothick Chippendale. A collection of porcelain consists of Oriental and Chelsea pieces amongst others, and there is a particularly splendid display of Jacobite toasting glasses.

The Hall stands in secluded parkland and the delightful landscaped garden of rolling lawns, winding paths and beautiful trees and lakes is mainly the result of the 2nd Baronet's influence. Spring flowers, especially daffodils and bluebells, are profuse. Seen at their glorious best in June is the vista of rhododendrons, azaleas and the giant wisteria. North of the house lies the haven of the rose garden.

George Eliot, the novelist, was born on the estate and Arbury and Sir Roger were immortalised by her in her book, Scenes of Clerical Life.
