The Dining Room

Originally a billiard room, this is the smaller of the two dining rooms, the larger one being in the private apartments. The dining table is set with silver and silver-gilt made by two of the greatest silversmiths. The cutlery was made by Paul Storr in London 1819 with the exception of the dessert spoons which are the work of John and Henry Lias 26 years later. Robert Garrard made the pair of silver-gilt three-tier compotes-en-suite in 1864. Paul Storr was also responsible for the wine flagons and the butter dishes. The pair of silver-gilt two-handled cups by that other great silversmith Paul de Lamerie was made in 1726. The large Savonnerie carpet is from the Louvres series and the marble-topped giltwood side tables are mid-18th century.

The paintings are, from left to right as you enter: a portrait of Duchess May; a portrait of a lady by Alexis Grimoux; a pastel of a coquette by Nattier; Dame Cornelius Van Hoftel by M. J. Miervelt; Peg Woffington the actress by Hogarth portrait of a lady by Allan Ramsay; General Sir Charles Dalbiac, grand- father of the 7th Duke of Roxburghe, by Saye; the 8th Duke of Roxburghe in the robes of the Order of the Thistle by David Alison, R.S.A.; a portrait of a gentleman; a drawing of the 5th Duke of Roxburghe and La Glombe Cherie by Valayer Coster.
