Blair Castle

Fourth Duke's Corridor

We now pass the Front Staircase and go along the gallery from where a good view of the Entrance Hall can be obtained. We then ascend the circular staircase to the second floor where on the left is the 4th Duke's Corridor. Among other contemporary portraits is a charming conversation piece by David Allan showing the Duke in Highland Dress with his first wife, the Hon. Jane Cathcart. There is another portrait here of the 4th Duke painted shortly before he died in 1830, and over the door is a portrait of George Murray, Bishop of Rochester, son of the Duke's brother, the Rt Rev Lord George Murray, and an ancestor of the present Duke. At the time of the threatened invasion of England by Napoleon, Lord George, who then held a living in Kent, raised and trained a volunteer corps for the defence of the southern coast. He also invented a system of semaphore which was adopted by the Admiralty. The 5th Duke as a Boy is shown in a small picture, probably by Livesey. He died unmarried in 1846.
