The Great Hall

The original Great Hall was described and greatly admired by Horace Walpole when he visited the house in 1763. It had a fine Gothic timbered roof and a beautiful Ionic oak screen. This would have been the hub and centre of the original Elizabethan household, where great banquets were held for visitors of rank. Today, it is still the perfect setting for a dinner or ball. The vast galleried hall rises two storeys. It is dominated by a magnificent Elizabethan fireplace with oak carving, which was originally in Canonbury House, Islington, also owned by the Compton family. Overnight accommodation is available in a fine selection of bedrooms at the Castle.

The Great Hall is 45x26x33 feet and will accommodate 40 people in Boardroom layout or 200 people as a reception room.
