Bishop Henry and Douglas Rooms
Bishop Henry Room
Named after Henry Compton, Lord Bishop of London. An uncompromising clergyman, he married the Princess Mary to William, Prince of Orange and was always opposed to James II. When in 1688 the Prince of Orange made his Declaration of Reasons for assuming the Crown, he specifically mentioned Bishop Henry's suspension as a flagrant piece of injustice. The Bishop's portrait hangs above the fireplace.
Douglas
The Comptons have always felt a strong affection for the Highlands and for their Scottish descent. The 2nd Marquess married Margaret, eldest daughter of Major General William Douglas Clephane and goddaughter of Sir Walter Scott. Douglas also gives us a glimpse of the family's famous sense of humour. The bed is fashioned from a 19th century billiard table, though guests may rest assured that a comfortable matress has replaced the original!
