STEPHEN I OF HUNGARY

In 997 Stephen I (977-1038) became the first King of Hungary. According to tradition, Pope Sylvester gave a crown to King Stephen on his coronation on Christmas Day 1000, as a reward for converting his people to Christianity.

Stephen unified the country and his reign was a time of peace and prosperity. After his death in 1038, he was made into a saint.
