RURIK

Slav communities developed in the east along many of the Russian rivers. These were ruled by Viking traders from Sweden who were known as the Rus. From this came the name Russia. The first leader of the Rus was Rurik. In 862 he led the Swedish Vikings to seize power in the north and found a trading post at Novgorod. From there they attacked Constantinople. He later founded Kiev, and all Russian nobility afterwards claimed to be descended from him.
