LECH WALESA Lech Walesa, the leader of Solidarity, was elected president of Poland in 1990. Solidarity is a federation of Polish trade unions formed in 1980 and based at the Gdansk shipyard. Solidarity - Solidarnosc in Polish - was independent of Poland's ruling Communist Party. After at first recognizing the organization, the Polish authorities banned it in 1981. Solidarity continued its activities in secret and was legalised in 1989, when it won power as part of a coalition government.
