LAIKA
Laika, a Soviet dog, was the first living creature in space. She left Earth on 3 November 1956, in a capsule on board Sputnik 2. It contained an air supply, food and water, together with instruments for recording her heartbeat, breathing and blood pressure. They transmitted data back to scientists on Earth. At that time, engineers did not know how to bring a spacecraft safely back to Earth, so sadly Laika died in space. Experiments like these provided vital information for human space travel.
