KARL FRIEDRICH BENZ Karl Friedrich Benz (1844-1929) was one of the pioneers of the motor car. In 1885 Benz developed the first practical car powered by a petrol engine; the three-wheeled vehicle had a top speed of 8 mph (13 km/h), and was an entirely new vehicle, unlike Daimler's 'horseless carriage'.
