HENRY IV OF FRANCE

In 1553, Henry of Navarre was born. In 1572 he became king of Navarre and married Margaret of Valois. All the Huguenot leaders came to Paris for the wedding, because he was the first Protestant claim to the throne.

In that same year he was held prisoner at court. With Catherine's approval most of the Protestant leadership, including the overall leader, Admiral Coligny, and several thousand other Protestants, were killed in a terrible massacre.

In 1589 he became Henry IV of France, the first Bourbon king. He tried to end the conflict, and in 1593 he converted to Catholicism. Henry signed the Edict of Nantes in 1598. This brought the French Wars of Religion to an end because it gave the Huguenots freedom to worship as they wanted.

In 1600 he married Marie de Medici. He was assassinated in 1610 by a fanatical monk, and was succeeded by Louis XIII, his nine-year-old son.
