DESIDERIUS ERASMUS Desiderius Erasmus (c. 1466-1536) was a Dutch priest and Renaissance scholar who encouraged a form of Humanism which laid stress on free will and taught that people should think for themselves in spiritual matters. He was, however, repelled by the violence that accompanied the Reformation when it came. He published an edition of the Greek New Testament. Though a Catholic, he clashed with the Church when he urged reforms to make the Church less worldly. In 1559 his books were placed on the Index of forbidden books.
