CHARLES MARTEL After the Franks invaded part of the Roman empire they settled in what is now central France. Their leader, Clovis, founded the Merovingian dynasty. When he died, the kingdom was divided between his sons, but this weakened it so much that power fell into the hands of Charles Martel, who had led the Franks against the Muslims at Poitiers. In 737 Martel defeated the moors again in a battle at Narbonne. The Carolingians ruled France until 987, fostering a cultural revival - the 'Carolingian renaissance'. Charles Martel's grandson was Charlemagne.
