BERNARD OF CLAIRVAUX

In 1115 St Bernard (1090-1153) founded an important monastery at Clairvaux, and became its first abbot. In his lifetime he founded more than 70 monasteries in Europe. He was a great influence on European leaders, and his preaching inspired France to join the Second Crusade in 1147.
