THE TOLTECS

The Toltec civilization flourished between 900 and 1168, in Central Mexico, with major cities at Tula and Chichen Itza. It was a continuation of the Maya culture, and the people made notable use of metals. Their trading network reached as far as Panama and Colombia. They were a warlike people, their whole empire being arranged along military lines, and their temples in Tula were guarded by huge stone statues of warriors. The Toltecs went so far as to invade the Mayas.

The Toltecs also believed in Quetzalcoatl, who was the legendary founder of Tula. Their kings were also religious leaders and one of them was called Tolpitzin Quetzalcoatl. Legend has it that he was driven out of Tula by a rival religious group and sailed east, vowing to return one day.
