New Orleans is Louisiana's largest city, situated on the Mississippi Delta. In around 1900 jazz music appeared in New Orleans, USA. It was a mixture of blues, religious gospel singing, and European influences. Driven by the urgent rhythms of West African music and using the melodic style of the Blues. Major artists of the 'jazz age' of the 1920s included American trumpeters Louis 'Satchmo' Armstrong (c.1898-1971), Bix Beiderbecke (1903-31), and the orchestral composer George Gershwin (1989-1937).
Annual Mardi Gras parades with colourful floats last for about two weeks and end on Shrove Tuesday. The city's French Quarter has buildings in French and Spanish colonial styles, with iron trellis balconies.
