MONTREAL In 1642 the French explorer De Maisonneuve founded Ville-Marie, which is now called Montreal. Before this, it was a Huron Indian town called Hochelaga. Cartier had earlier attempted to found a colony there, but failed. Montreal was built around a wooded hill called Mount Royal, from which it takes its name. Montreal has tall modern buildings, picturesque cobbled streets and underground shops and restaurants that give protection from both the bitterly cold, snowy winters and the hot summers. Montreal claims to be the world's second largest French-speaking city, after Paris. The Olympics were held in Montreal in 1976.
