The colony of Massachusetts was founded in 1629, and in 1641 wampum, or shell beads, became the coinage in that area.
The State of Massachusetts entered into the Union on 6 February, 1788. Its area is 21,456 sq km with a population of 5,913,000. The capital is Boston, and the state flower is, of course the mayflower.
Boston, as well as being the capital, is also the main port of the state. It was named after Boston in Lincolnshire, where many of the pilgrims had come from, and still has some elegant 18th-century buildings. In Cambridge, across the Charles River from Boston, are Harvard - America's oldest university founded in 1636 - and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
