THOMAS EDISON

In 1877 inventor Thomas Edison patented his phonograph; the early phonographs had to be turned by hand.

In 1879 he developed the electric light bulb. In 1880 his system was first used to light a steamship. In 1887 he joined forces with Swan to produce the 'Ediswan' household electric lamp. But when electric light was installed in public buildings, people were afraid that the light would damage their eyes. In 1892, rival firms controlled by Edison and Westinghouse combined to form General Electric. By 1900, a few homes had electric lights. They were fitted to brackets which were attached to the wall.
