Stewart of Appin
The son of Alexander the High Steward, Sir John Stewart Bonkyl was
the progenitor of this West Highland clan, and later his descendants
were to recieve the Lordship of Lorn, through marriage to the heiress
of Lorn.
Stewart of Lorn was killed at Dustaffnage Castle in 1463, and his son
became 1st of Appin, and desperately tried to keep the title of Lord
of Lorn, but to no avail.
The clan fought at Flodden and Pinkie, in 1513 and 1547. They supported
Montrose at the Battle of Inverlochy and in the very same year also
fought at Auldearn and Kilsyth.
The chief of Appin was outlawed and his lands were returned to the
Crown and given back to him at the Restoration. The clan joined on Dundee's
side in 1688 and supported the Jacobites in the Risings of 1715 and
1745.
The estate was sold in 1765 by the 9th chief , whose cousin became
chief of Appin and regained his confiscated paternal lands of Ardshiel.
