Shaw

Clan Shaw was part of the great Clan Chattan, and was one of the most prominent clans in the confederation. Farquhart Shaw, Shaw Mor, was by tradition the leader of the Clan Chattan at the clan battle at North Inch in Perth in 1396. For his services, he received the lands of Rothiemurchus, but, a few hundred years later were sold. His son James was killed at Harlaw in 1411, but his heir Alasdair, succeeded him.

It was Alasdair's brother who founded Clan Ay, and who later acted for Clan Shaw and at Inverness in 1543 and Termit in 1609 signed the Clan Chattan Bonds.

The Shaws supported Montrose and fought at the Jacobite Rising of 1715.

The sons of Alasdair took the ancestry of different lands and formed different branches of the clan. The second son, Alexander of the Shaws of Dell, the third, James, of the Shaws of Dalnavert, the fourth son, Farquhar fromed Clan Farquharson and the fifth, Iver formed the Shaws of Harris and the Isles.

There are many different branches of the Clan Shaw, including the Shaws of the Lowlands, who originated with William de Shaw, the Shaws of Sauchie and the Shaws of Greeneck.

In 1970, a new chief of Clan Shaw was matriculated after the post being vacant for 400 years,
