Robertson
The clan is descended from the ancient Celtic Earls of Atholl, and
their Gaelic name comes from Donnachadh Reamhar, Stout Duncan, who was
a great friend of Bruce, who led the clan at Bannockburn. It was from
Grizzled Robert, that the clan took the name Robertson, and who also
captured the murderers of James I.
The Robertsons received the Barony of Struan for this bravery, but
half of the barony was stolen by the Earl of Atholl, and never returned.
The Robertsons were close supporters of the Stewarts and accompanied
Montrose in his battles. After the Restoration, Charles II gave Robert
of Struan a hefty pension for his services.
Alexander Roberston was training to become a priest when he inherited
the chiefship. He left the church, took up the chiefship, wrote celebrated
poetry and eventually joined Viscount Dundee. He was attained but received
remission in 1703. He was captured again at Sherriffmuir but managed
to escape to France.
