Rose

It is recorded that in 1219, Hugh Rose of Geddes was witness to the foundation charter of Beauly Priory and this proves that the clan had settled in the area of Nairn in the 12th century.

Hugh's son acquired the lands of Kilravock on the Moray Firth through marriage, and this remains in the Rose family to this very day.

Hugh of Kilravock built the old tower of Kilravock in 1460, and the Barony was erected in 1474.

Hugh, 10th of Kilravock, Sherriff of Ross, Constable of Inverness Castle and Sherriff Principal of Inverness, was captured at the Battle of Pinkie in 1547.

The Roses of Kilravock were loyal to the government in the Risings of 1715 and 1745. They voted against the Union of 1707, but were one of the first commissioners to represent Scotland in the British Parliament.

Sir Hugh Rose, born in 1803, was in charge of the Central Field Force during the Indian Mutiny, in which he fought in sixteen successful actions. He was raised to the peerage as Baron Strathnairn in 1866, and made Field Marshall in 1877.
