Ogilvie

The Ogilvies originated from the ancient earls of Angus, in particular, Glibert, who was granted the barony of Ogilvie by William the Lion around the time of 1163.

Ogilvie of Auchterhouse was slain in battle by the Clan Robertson, and his son, the Sheriff of Angus, styled Lord Ogilvie was killed at the Battle of Harlaw in 1411. The son of the Sherriff became the Lord High Treasurer and built the tower of Airlie.

Sir James Ogilvie was created Lord Ogilvie of Airlie in 1491.

The Ogilvies were royalists during the Civil Wars and gave gallant service to the cause. The 2nd Earl Of Airlie was captured at Philiphaugh in 1645 and sentenced to death. He escaped on the eve of his death by adopting the disguise of his sisters clothes.

The Ogilvie clan were active in the Jacobite Risings of 1715 and 1745, and the 5th Lord of Ogilvie took the clan to join Prince Charles, but was attained and escaped to France. He received a pardon and returned to Scotland in 1783.

Although his son took the name of 7th Earl, it was not restored officially again until 1825. The 8th Earl of Airlie was killed at the Battle of Diamond Hill in South Africa in 1900.
