Logan

The Logan clan was made up of two different Highland families, Lowland and Highland. In the Lowlands the chiefship was at Lastalrig, or Restalrig near Edinburgh. Through marriage the chief of the Lowland Logans attained the title of Admiral of Scotland in 1400. The Logans in the South were eventually outlawed and the line ended at Fast Castle in Berwickshire.

The Logans of the North, Siol Ghillinnein, (MacLennans) descend from the logans of Drumderfir in Easter Ross.

The folklore states that a feud betweeen the Logans and the Frasers ended in a battle in which the chief of the Logans was slain and his widowed wife captured by the Frasers. She gave birth to a baby who was grossly deformed and was given a nickname by the Frasers, that of Crotair MacGilligorm. He was educated by monks at Beauly, and on reaching adulthood, decided to become a clergyman and took Holy Orders at Kilmor in Sleat and in Kilchrinin, Glenelg. As was the tradition with clergymen at that period, he was not celibate, and his descendants became known as Siol Fhinnein or MacLennans.

The MacLennans were the standard bearers to Lord Seaforth at the Battle of Aulderan in 1645,. and many were slain. The MacLennan name can still be found, mainly in the location of Ross-shire.
