Livingstone
This Clan name hails way back before the 12th Century and originally
appears as Livingston. In fact , Sir William Livingstone witnessed a
charter of the Earl of Lennox in 1270 and it is from Sir William that
the Livingstons of Livingston originate from. Sir William recieved the
lands of Callendar from the Livingstons of Westquarter and Kinnaird,
of Bonton and Dunipace.
The Livingstons were created Lord Livingstons in 1458. and the 5th
Lord had charge of the child Queen Mary for many years until the cessation
of the Battle of Pinkie in 1547. The 7th Lord was created, Earl of Linlinthgow
in1600, and the title was attained in 1716 because the 5th Earl was
engaged in the Rising of 1715. For this reason the viscountcy of Kilsyth
was attained.
The Livingstons claim to be decendants to the Lord of the Isles. The
Livingstons also followed the Stewarts
of Appin and fought with them at the Battle of Culloden, where a
Donald Livingston rescued the Banner of Stewart. The Livingstons went
on to keep the crozier of the Bishops of Lismore.
One of the most famous descendants of the Livingstones is David Livingstone,
the famous intrepid explorer, who orginates from the Argyll family.
