Henderson
The Hendersons are found widely spread throughout Scotland, and those
in the Caithness claim to be part of Clan Gunn. The Hendersons claim
to be one of the first inhabitants of Glencoe, part of the Clan Eanruig,
and way before anyone else settled there. Their Gaelic name can sometimes
termed in English, MacKendrick.
Traditional folklore states that 'Iain Fraoch', the brother of the
1st Lord of the Isles, married a daughter of the chief of the Hendersons
of Glencoe, and their son, Iain Abrach (as he was born in Lochaber)
was the founder of the Maclains of Glencoe, and the clan was known as
the Clan Abrach. The Hendersons had a prominent position in the Clan
Abrach in which they were always the pipers. A position which required
great courage and strength.
Famed members of the clan include the Reverend Alexander Henderson,
of the Fordell branch, who was a leader in the Presbyterian Church of
Scotland during the early 17th Century. He helped to prepare the National
Covenant of 1638 and was Moderator of the Glasgow Assembly which outlined
Presbyterian organistaion in the same year. He also drafted the Solemn
League and Covenant in 1643.
