Gunn

The Clan Gunn are famed for being fierce and great warriors, as the literal meaning of their name would suggest. The clan claim that their origin dates back as far as 'Olave the Black, Norse king of Man and the Isles who died in 1237. Thier lands included Caithness and Sutherland in the North of Scotland, and continued to extend until the 15th Century, until their continual battling with other clans led them to chiefly settle in one area, Sutherland.

In the 15th Century the Clan received a great honour, George Gunn was 'Crowner', the badge of which was a great brooch and which made him one of the greatest men in the country. He resided in great luxury in his castle at Clyth but was murdered for his attempts to create a reconcilliation between the Gunns and Keiths. This death was avenged by his grandson, who killed Keith of Ackergill, many of his family and men at Drummoy in Sutherland.

The Gunns continued feuding through the years, especially with the Mackays and the Earls of Cathness and Sutherland. Many battles ensued, and after many vistories the Gunns were eventually defeated
