Grant
The Grants were supporters of William the Wallace, and in the 13th
Century they were known to be sheriffs in Inverness. They claim they
are originated from Kenneth McAlpine, a Scottish King in the 9th Century,
and that they are one of the clans belonging to Siol Alpine.
John Grant, chief of the clan, married the daughter of Gilbert of Glencairnie,
and from his son came the Grants of Freuchie. From this came the Grants
of Tullochgorm; Earls of Seafield, the Grants of Corrimony and the Grants
of Glenmoriston.
Through marriage the earldom of Seafield was attained. The 8th Earl
died without a son and the title was passed on to his uncle. The 11th
Earl was killed in the First World War.
The Grants were predominantly Royalist, although in the Jacobite risings
the clan supported the Hanoverian side, the Grants of Glenmoriston broke
off to support the jacobite cause.
The chiefship of Clan Grant remained in the Lords Strathspey.
