Fletcher

The name Fletcher can be translated to mean maker of arrows, and as a result has origins in many of the Scottish clans. Some of these clans are the Stewarts and the Campbells in Argyll and the MacGregors in Perthshire, with whom the Fletchers have had alliances. Firstly with the Stewarts of Appin for helping to recover stolen cattle and later with the Campbells of Glenorchy, hence the Fletchers lay claim to being the original inhabitiants of Glenorchy and even have a local saying, "It was the Clan Fletcher that raised the first smoke to boil water in Orchy".

The Fletchers of Glenlyon made arrows for the MacGregors and it is recorded that a Fletcher saved the life of Rob Roy. They were also out in the rising of 1745.

Andrew Fletcher, a famous Scottish patriot belonged to the Fletchers of Innerpeffer and Saltoun, and his nephew later became Lord Milton, a respected judge.

The Fletchers of Dunans were an important family in the 18th and 19th Centuries.

The name Fletcher has become confused with Flesher throught the years, but one can assume that they are part of the same clan.
