Drummond

The original Drummonds hailed from the area of Drymen, where it is recorded that Sir Malcolm de Drymen fought with Robert the Bruce at the Battle of Bannockburn, and it was his cunning plan to litter the ground with spiky caltrops that forced the English Cavalry to suffer disastrous losses. Sir Malcolm was rewarded by recieving land in Perthshire, and it is here that the name Drummond has more recently been associated with.

In the 14th Century the Drummond ladies wed Kings of Scotland;: Margaret Drummond married David II in 1369 and Annabella Drummond married Robert III and had a son: James I.

Sir John Drummond was made Lord Drummond in 1488 and in 1605 earldom of Perth was given to the 4th Baron Drummond.

The Drummonds were always fiercely loyal to the Stuarts and were rewarded for their services by gaining titles such as the earldom of Melfort and viscountcy of Strathallan. After escaping to France after the Jacobite risings, the Earl of Perth was made a Duke by James VII, and at the Battle of Culloden the Viscount of Strathallan was slain. The Drummond estates were forfeited and restored by 1785 to the great gransdon of the first Earl, who then became Lord of Perth in 1797.
