Cumming
In the reign of Robert the Bruce, his friends were rewarded at the
expense of his enemies. The family of Comyn were unfortunate and lost
a large amount of land and titles to the King's supporters. The name
is still a popular North Scottish name.
There are three different branches of the family: the Cummings of Culter;
the Cummings of Relugas and principally the Cummings of Altyre. The
first Cummings of Altyre was named Ferquhard, the son of Sir Richard
Cumming.
In the 15th and 16th Century the Cummings were prominent in public
affairs, and in 1594 Alexander Cumming of Altyre commanded a troop of
horse in Huntly's army at the Battle of Glanlivet.
Due to the marriage of Robert Cumming of Altyre in 1657 to Lucy, the
daughter of Sir Ludovick Gordon of Gordonstown, the Cummings were, in
1804, able to assume the name and arms of Gordon of Gordonstown. Alexander
Cummings of Altyre was the first to receive the name and arms and was
also created a baronet. His grandson, Sir Alexander Penrose Gordon-Cumming,the
3rd baronet had a brother Roualeyn who was a celebrated 19th Century
explorer and lion hunter.
