Colquhoun
The Colquhoun lands were and are to be found in Dunbartonshire.
These lands were given to Humphrey of Kilpatrick by Malcolm, Earl
of Lennox, in the time of Alexander II. When, in the 14th Century, Sir
Robert Kilpatrick married the Laird of Luss daughter, the chiefship
was changed to Colquhoun and Luss.
The Colquhouns had a lasting feud with the MacGregors, which culminated
in battle at Glenfruin around 1602. The Colquhouns tried to snare the
MacGregors but their plan went astray and the MacGregors killed the
clan chief and were the victors. The Colquhouns were furious and in
retribution went to James VI and made a sensational representation.
This lead to the clan MacGregor being proscribed. The name of the MacGregors
was banned under punishment of death. This harsh ruling was to last
for over a hundred years.
The present Luss family is descended from James Grant of Pluscarden,
who entered the clan through marriage, to the daughter of Sir Humphrey,
18th chief.
