Chisholm
The Chisholm clan are fierce and proud, with many different claims to
their origin. Some say that they came over from Normandy and others that
the clan is of Celtic descent.
It has been recorded that Chisholm was designated as the Thane of Caithness,
in the 12th Century and in the Ragman Rolls of 1296, a Richard de Cheschelme
and John de Cheshome are mentioned as giving support to King Edward
I, of England. Whatever the origin, the clan is infamous in folklore
for the occassion when a chief of the clan stated that three people
in the world are only allowed to use the definite article: 'The King,
The Pope and The Chisholm'.!
In the 13th Century, the chief of the Chisholms was named the Constable
of Urquhart Castle on Loch Ness. A marriage by Andrew to the heiress
of Erchless in Kintail gave rise to the family of Erchless and Strathglass.
The lands were given to Wiland de Chesholm in 1513, when the male line
ended.
The clan fought with courage and bravery under the Jacobite cause at
the Battle of Culloden with Prince Charles. They gave the Prince accommodation
at Glanmoriston when he sought refuge after the battle and led him across
the country to the port of Arisaig.
