Semi Circles

Semi-circles were drawn in the wide passages at the sides of the barn -like Lancasterian School room. Each semi - circle was marked with a teaching post upon which a board inscribed with the lesson was hung.

A monitor would take a small group of boys to stand on a semi - circle. The monitor would then instruct his group in the lesson he had learned from the Master. The best pupil moved into no.1 place on the semi - circle.

When the lesson had been completed, the pupils returned to their desks where they were tested by the master. The most successful might receive a small reward for his good work whilst those who repeatedly failed to learn or who disobeyed the rules were punished. Movement between semi - circles and desks was accomplished with a military style precision to a set series of commands.

The Headmaster oversaw everything that occurred, taught the monitors and rewarded their success, tested the pupils, read the scriptures to the whole mass of boys and gave out rewards and punishments.
