Owain Glyndwr c. 1359-1415

The enigmatic leader of the last Welsh revolt was a Welsh squire called Owain glyndwr who inspired such patriotism amongst the Welsh people that it led to the setting up of a Welsh Parliament and Chancery.

The rebellion began with a dispute over a piece of common-land with Lord Grey of Ruthin. The King failed to settle the dispute and when Grey tried to murder Glyndwr he sacked the town of Ruthin.

King Henry's army invaded Wales to suppress the disorder, requiring the Welsh to take up arms. Owain Glyndwr's skills as a military leader kept the English forces at bay for over ten years. He assumed the title of 'Prince of Wales' and the arms of the Welsh Princes.

There is no record of how Owain Glyndwr met his end though it is assumed that he spent the later years of his life in quiet isolation at the home of one of his daughters.
