Lady Jane Grey, "Nine Days Queen", 1553
Jane was born in 1537. Her father-in-law, the Duke of Northumberland, had made Edward nominate her as his heir and on Edward's death, the Duke tried to kidnap the other heir with the strongest claim, Mary, the eldest child of Henry VIII.
This plan failed and the country rose in uproar, proclaiming Mary as Queen of England. The Duke was taken prisoner and executed, as were Jane and her husband just after the announcement of Mary's marriage to Philip of Spain.
