David II. 1329-1371

Coming to the Scottish throne at the age of five David found himself with a lot on his plate. He had been married at the ludicrously sounding age of four to the daughter of the English king.

Within four years of his coming to the throne he found himself having to defend it against the son of John Balliol. Edward Balliol landed in Fife supported by Scottish Barons of anglophile persuasions. Balliol defaeated the Scots army at the Battle of Dupplin Moor and was crowned king. Less than twelve months later Balliol was back in England licking his wounds.

The next year saw Balliol once more attack Scotland with the support of Edward III. They were victorious and a partitioned Scotland resulted. King David, now a full eight years old, took refuge in Scotland's new found friend, France. He returned when Balliol had been driven out of Scotland once and for all.

He retained an animosity for the English and with Edward away in France invaded England. The English were becoming a formidable fighting force, the Battle of Crecy proving this, and David was defeated at Neville's Cross in 1346. He was imprisoned for 11 years in an English jail.

He died in 1371, apparently from natural causes. He remained without issue.
