The George Medal (G.M.)
The George Medal was instituted at the same time as the George Cross in recognition of the many acts of great bravery performed by men and women. These included all the members of the Dover Fire Brigade and Auxiliary Fire Service who did excellent work in difficult and dangerous circumstances following a large scale attack by enemy bombers on Dover Harbour in 1940.
A number of George Medals have also been awarded to rescuers who showed great courage following explosions and fire on the Piper Alpha oil platform in the North Sea.
