Beaulieu

A Letter from Lord Montagu of Beaulieu

On behalf of the Montagu family I warmly welcome you to Beaulieu and in particular to Beaulieu Abbey and Palace House, our family home. Since 1951 I have been privileged to be the lifetime guardian of these beautiful and historic buildings and I am just one more generation of the family which has cared lovingly for Beaulieu over four centuries and which will continue to care in the future.

I have always believed that Britain's great houses and gardens, originally created for the pleasure of a few, should now be enjoyed by everyone who shares a love of Britain's heritage. That is why Beaulieu is open daily throughout the year and your visit helps ensure that Beaulieu will survive for future generations to appreciate.

Since the foundation of the Abbey in the l3th century, Beaulieu has been home for hundreds of people. It is these people who add life and colour to the historic buildings themselves and the following pages do more than simply describe the buildings as they are today. They explain, with reference to the main areas of the Abbey, the daily life of the monks and lay brothers, while in the rooms of Palace House I have portrayed some aspects of l9th century life here.

I hope therefore that the following pages on Beaulieu and the National Motor Museum, which tells the story of the motor vehicle, will provide interesting reading at home.

If you would like to visit Beaulieu then we look forward to welcoming you!

LORD MONTAGU OF BEAULIEU.
