History

The mysterious Chevaliere Casentini designed the house for Charles Sabine Augustus Thellusson in an Italianate classical style which was unusual for its day. It was built between 1861 and 1863.

Brodsworth Hall and its contents have survived almost intact. An extraordinary time capsule which has been carefully conserved by English Heritage to preserve its faded grandeur. Brodsworth conveys a vivid picture of daily life in a country house. The decoration and furnishings reflect not only the function of the rooms but the class, sex and even the age of the people who used them. The elegance of the ladies drawing rooms contrasts with the more masculine atmosphere of the billiard room, the luxury of the family rooms with the plainer quarters of the servants' wing and the practical equipment of the great kitchens.

The design of the gardens is also unchanged, with formal gardens, croquet lawns and a quarry garden, rich in wildlife and garden history.
