Laugharne Castle

Picturesque Laugharne Castle stands on a low ridge overlooking the wide Taf estuary. One of a string of fortresses controlling the ancient route along the south Wales coast, the castle has a long and chequered history.

It originated as a Norman earth and timber stronghold, re-built in stone during the 13th and 14th centuries by successive generations of the Brian family. Much of their work survives, including the domed round keep-tower and protruding gatehouse of the inner bailey, constructed green stone additons.

Converted into a luxurious Elizabethan mansion by the flamboyant Sir John Perrot, the castle reverted to its military role during the Civil War; after a week-long siege and bombardment, it fell to a Parliamentarian night attack in 1644. Later the romantic ruins became the backdrop for a delightful Georgian and Victorian garden which is being recreated using exclusively Victorian flowers and plants.
