THE KING'S STATE BEDCHAMBER
A fine reconstruction by Wyatville. The 18th century bed with its Empire-style hangings was slept in by Napoleon III and the Empress Eugenie when they visited Queen Victoria in 1855. It bears their monograms. This room now houses part of the collection of Canalettos bought by George III from Joseph Smith, British Consul in Venice and celebrated collector.
Although the ceiling frieze carries the arms of Charles II and the date 1660 is visible these are 19th century additions and it is not certain the King actually slept here but was more likely to have used what is now called The King's Dressing Room next door.
